In Bangladesh, the Chakma and Tripura communities are custodians of a wealth of heritage embodying values of harmony, resilience, and a profound respect for nature. Of Roots and Heritage: Tales from the Hills—Chakma and Tripura Communities in Bangladesh brings these values to life through a collection of stories that reflect the lived experiences, wisdom, and worldview of these two communities. Featuring contributions from young Chakma and Tripura storytellers, this anthology represents the voices of communities whose perspectives on peace, gender, and sustainability offer valuable lessons for today’s world. Edited by Rifat Munim and presented in the Chakma, Tripura, Bangla, and English languages, this collection builds a bridge between cultures, offering readers an immersive experience of many aspects of the Chakma and Tripura peoples’ heritage in Bangladesh. This publication is part of UNESCO’s Hooked on Peace (HOP) initiative, implemented in partnership with The Asia Foundation Bangladesh with support from the Japanese Funds-in-Trust, under the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032). The Decade, a global initiative spearheaded by UNESCO and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), emerged as an urgent response to the critical situation of many indigenous languages, aiming to preserve, revitalise, and promote these languages worldwide. The Decade builds on the achievements of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, a year in which UNESCO led efforts to address the growing threats to indigenous languages and draw attention to their value as cultural assets and vehicles of peace.
